Sakura et les bass du Mexique

Le 14 ème Championnat du Monde de pêche au Bass s’est tenu du 29 Octobre au 4 Novembre au Mexique sur la lac de Cuchillo, non loin de la frontière avec les États-Unis.
The 14th Annual Black Bass World Championship was held from October 29th to November 4th in Nuevo Leon, on Mexico’s Lake Cuchillo, just shy of two hours away from the US border.

Le lac de Cuchillo est immense! D’une superficie de 17 000 hectares, le lac est littéralement couvert d’arbres immergés et de postes en tout genre. Ajouter à cela le fait qu’il abrite une population de Bass parmi les plus gros au monde et vous obtenez un véritable paradis. Le rêve de tout pêcheur de « bigmouth »!
The lake is brimming with submerged trees, various objects, underwater structures … in short, it is heaven on earth and every bass angler’s dream. Moreover, it’s home to some of the largest bass in the world.

Je vous laisse deviner le degré d’excitation qui était le mien le jour du départ. Le voyage m’a semblé durer une éternité. Tout d’abord, nous conduisîmes de Zagreb à Budapest, puis en guise d’amuse-bouche, un premier vol pour Paris avant d’entamer douze heures de transatlantique vers Mexico city. Là-bas un dernier vol nous attendait vers Monterrey avant de finir notre périple en voiture vers notre camp de base, la ville de China située non loin de la rive nord-est du lac.
I don’t have to particularly emphasize how excited we were on the day of the departure. It seemed to us that the journey to our destination took forever. First, we drove from Zagreb to Budapest, then took the first flight to Paris. After a twelve – hour flight to Mexico City, we took another flight to Monterrey, and then drove to China where we were situated.

Trois semaines après mon retour du Mexique, le souvenir de chaque seconde de ce premier jour, de ce premier trajet vers le lac, est toujours aussi vivace. Là, nous faisons la connaissance de Juan notre guide pour le séjour. A peine montés dans le bateau, il nous interpelle dans un anglais approximatif, « Guys, do you want a fast ride ? » Nous étions excités comme des enfants le jour de Noël ! Au niveau pêche, nous alternerons flipping et pitching pour la majorité du temps. Après avoir expliqué à Juan notre stratégie, il nous conduisit vers un premier spot, qui s’avéra immédiatement productif. Je n’oublierai jamais cette première “tape“ mexicaine qui me laissa désemparé par sa douceur. Surpris, j’oublierai quasiment de ferrer cette caresse. Il s’en suivit l’inévitable, le poisson estimé à plus 50 cm se décrocha en quelques secondes sous le bateau. Cette première fois me servit de leçon !
Even three weeks after returning from Mexico, I still vividly remember every detail of our drive from the hotel to the lake on the first training day. First attempts to communicate with our driver Juan who speaks English poorly, and we don’t speak Spanish at all, first look at El Cuchillo at sunrise, stepping into the bass boat for the first time and Juan’s question, »Guys, do you like a fast ride? » … haha. We were happy and excited like children who were gifted a toy they had wanted for a long time. A far as fishing itself, we spent the first day mostly flipping and pitching. Having explained to the boatman what we wanted and where we wanted to go, he took us to a promising position that immediately proved to be successful. I will never forget the first bite in Mexico that caught me off guard because it was extremely gentle, so I didn’t counter-react properly. As a result, the bass we had estimated at 50+ centimeters got unhooked under the boat.

Après cela, nous capturerons plusieurs petits poissons. Puis vint enfin notre première vache mexicaine, 55 cm pour 2.45 kg de muscles. Nous hurlâmes comme des enfants! Juan notre guide, nous regardait circonspect jusqu’à ce que je lui explique qu’un Bass de cette taille représentait à la fois mon nouveau record personnel et un Bass plus que respectable pour tout pêcheur en Croatie.
Every beginning is difficult, I guess. Afterwards, we caught several smaller fish, and soon after, I caught the first 55 cm and 2,45 kg Mexican beast. Our driver Juan was looking at us in disbelief, wondering why we were screaming like children, until I explained to him that the fish was my new PB and that a bass of such dimensions was more than respectable fish in Croatia.

A la fin de la journée, nous étions très satisfaits. Nous avions capturé un bon nombre de poissons et repéré des zones prometteuses pour le premier jour du championnat. L’attitude originale de ces Bass nous força à revoir notre pêche et notre matériel. En effet, leur capacité à prendre nos leurres de façon si subtile était totalement déconcertante. Notre combo le plus utilisé était constitué d’une ICONIC 742H équipée d’un WOMBAT 65 PWR. Ce combo répondait parfaitement aux exigences du lieu, légèreté et sensibilité afin de « flipper » sans se fatiguer les nombreux arbres immergés et une grosse réserve de puissance afin de contrer les gros Bass qui hantent les eaux du lac.
At the end of the day, we had a reason to smile because we caught a large number of bass and set a holding position for the big fish on the first day of the tournament. Also, I felt in a more painful way on my own rod what we had been hearing about, which was that the big fish bites on flipping on Cuchillo were so often subtle and gentle, like a tiny fish nibbling on the bait … you feel a light tossing and you have to counter-react with all the strength you have because you don’t know if the bait is being chewed by a tiny fish or by a bass weighing several kilos. Unbelievable.

Pour ce second jour de pre-fishing, nous avons preferé laissé reposer le spot de la vieille. Nous nous concentrâmes plutot sur de l’exploration. Nous attrapèrâmes ainsi beaucoup de poissons, mais plus petits que la veille. Le leurre du jour fut un crank deep-diver SCB 400. La technique du jour consistait à faire nager le crank le plus profond possible pour déclencher les touches. La couleur qui donna le plus de résultat fut le blanc PO6 loin devant le Fire Tiger et Mat Tiger. Nos combos du jour, TRINIS NEO 662 MH et CALIX C81H pour le cranking / spinnerbait ainsi qu’une RYOKAN 782 MH et ALPAX 4508 SW pour les pêches plus fines en spinning.

We adapted the equipment we used to the conditions on the water … since the flipping of branches and treetops sprouting from the water using Texas rig is the dominant technique on the lake, the basic set for such fishing consisted of Sakura Iconic 742 H 2.25 m and 10-42 g rod and Sakura Wombat 65 PWR casting reel. Sakura’s top offer for casting fishing completely justified its status and it was a pleasure to spend four days casting baits on the lake… To sum up, the rod is an elegant beast, just what we needed in a situation where you could never be sure if there was a tiny fish or a monster laying underneath a stump. There is no room for compromise, and this version of Iconic is exactly that … uncompromising. On the second training day we didn’t want to force the positions that gave us the fish on the first day, as we wanted to visit as many new positions as possible. As a very useful bait on that day, we used Sakura SCB 400 Crank which dives up to four meters, although in some positions crankbaits of even greater diving depth were crucial. The second thing we noticed was that white coloured crankbaits gave us more fish, and we were quite short of them. While preparing for the tournament, we were under the impression that the baits used were predominantly flamboyant, like Fire Tiger, Mat Tiger or various versions of Chartreuse color. We used Trinis Neo 662 MH 1.98m 7-28 g casting rods and Sakura Calix C81H casting reels for crankbait and spinnerbait fishing, while spinning kits were based on Sakura Ryokan 782 MH 2.33m and 10-35 g rods and the Sakura Alpax 4508 SW reels.
